Iolite is one of the semi-precious stone which is generally Violet-Blue, Deep Blue, Light Blue-Gray, and Yellow-White in color. On the scale of Mohs hardness, they are given a score which lies between 7 to 7.5 They belong to Cordierite family as far as mineral class is concerned and are widely found in countries like, India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Brazil.

The name of this gemstone Iolite has origin from a Greek word ‘long’ which means violet in English. Many times this gemstone is confused with another gemstone namely, Tanzanite because both of them appear same in color. The color of an iolite is generally in the different shades of violet which even reaches to the color family of blue. Some of the colors in which gemstone is found are blue, purple, lavender, grey, grey-blue and even deeper blue. In the ancient time, this gemstone was used as a tool for navigating by those Viking explorers. Also, this gemstone used to cut into thin pieces and was used as filtering lenses. After the lenses are filtered they used to look through those lenses and then determine the position of the sun in the different time of the day and tell it to the whole world.
